If there’s one thing you should be able to tell about me by now, it’s that I’m not a bullshit artist (no, really, the story I’m about to recount is true); It’s 1991 and I’m out at this busy bar restaurant in Island Park New York getting practically sneered at by all of the people in my age group, guy and girl, because I had decided to don the trademark look of manly distinction that a highly respected role model of mine always wore, and still does, to perfection (the fact that I was only ten years old is beside the point). Yes, I was daring to wear without the pre-approval of some style thief in Hollywood or on Madison avenue, that now tired refuge of the weak chin and soft upper lip of so many of the boys masquerading as men for the last seventeen years; the Goatee. But in retrospect it’s not really surprising that those charlatans would soon follow my lead; for when it comes to fashion, am I’m not universally likened to the name of a certain professional basketball team from Portland? True story, for real!
